Vinum: Barbera

Over the past two months, I have been enjoying as many new (to me) varieties as I can get my hands on.

Last week, I listened to a podcast about Barbera. It is an acidic grape that pairs well with tomato dishes, like pasta and pizza. I picked up a bottle and enjoyed it with some Massachusetts bar pizza. I was interested in the idea of acidity. As a new wine enthusiast, I want to find wines that exemplify “acidity,” “dryness,” “body,” etc. I found that by drinking Barbera and comparing it to a Bordeaux, I could feel the stark difference between the two reds. The wine felt sharp with its acidity, and I found notes of cherry.

I would enjoy this wine again on a night at home with pizza and a movie!

I have been doing the same with food, perfume and the art I encounter in day-to-day life. Taking a moment to engage your senses provides a second to pause and appreciate the artistry that goes into most aspects of our world.

Tasting wine and experimenting with different grapes and regions has helped me find a way to be more present and to carve out a moment of peace in my day. Tasting wine mindfully forces you to pause and focus on the present. A few months ago, I attended a webinar about imposter syndrome for women in academia. One of the coordinators mentioned a similar ritual with chocolate, which I found useful. The idea of finding something to look forward to each day resonated with me, so exploring wine and tasting new bottles has become a ritual I anticipate.
